Bandwidth — how much speed do you actually need?

Plans are sold on one big download number, but that number is a ceiling, not an experience. What decides whether your connection feels good is how much runs at the same time, how much upload you have, and whether the line stays responsive when it is busy. Work out your real demand below — then check whether a bigger plan would actually fix your problem, because usually it will not.

STEP 1The number you are sold is a ceiling, not an experience

A plan advertised at 500 Mbps does not mean anything on your network moves at 500 Mbps. It means that is the most the line will carry in total, in ideal conditions, when something is capable of using it.

Two things follow, and together they explain most disappointment with a “fast” plan:

  • Almost nothing uses your full speed. A 4K stream wants ~25 Mbps. A video call wants ~4 Mbps each way. A single download from a busy server is usually capped by that server, not by you. The plan is a shared budget, not a per-app speed.
  • What matters is the total in flight at once. The right question is not “how fast is my plan?” but “what is my household doing on its busiest evening, all at the same time?” That total is almost always far smaller than people expect.
If your speed test already meets your plan

Then bandwidth is not your problem, and a bigger plan will not help. A connection that tests at full speed but still feels bad is a latency problem — see the bufferbloat guide — or a problem inside your own network, on Wi-Fi or a cable. Check what you are actually getting before you shop.

STEP 2Add up what really runs at once

Set the counters below to a realistic worst-case evening in your house — everything genuinely running simultaneously, not everything you do in a week. The two meters are separate budgets, and that separation is the point of the whole exercise.

Set how many of each run at the same time during your busiest evening. Streaming loads the download; calls, backups, and cameras load the upload — a different budget. Per-activity figures are deliberately generous.

Where the real limit is

The per-activity figures are deliberately generous — real usage is usually lower, and the suggested tiers include headroom on top. They are ballpark numbers for sizing a plan, not measurements of your specific devices. If your total lands well under what you are paying for, that is the useful answer: the plan is not your bottleneck.

STEP 3Upload is the budget nobody quotes you

Most home plans are asymmetric — a large download number and a much smaller upload one, often a tenth of it or worse. Plans are advertised on the download because it is the bigger figure, but upload is where a household is far more likely to run out.

Look at what actually loads the uplink: video calls (every participant is uploading), cloud backups, security cameras streaming offsite, anything you host or share from home. None of these are exotic any more, and several run unattended.

The reason a small uplink hurts more than the number suggests: when upload saturates, everything feels broken — including downloads. Every connection you make needs to send acknowledgements back upstream. Choke that return path and downloads stall, pages hang, and calls break up, even though the download meter looks healthy. One background backup can do it.

This is where bufferbloat bites hardest

A saturated uplink usually fills a buffer somewhere upstream, and that buffer adds delay to every connection in the house. It is the single most common cause of “the internet is fine but my call is choppy”. STEP 4Why the plan is usually not the bottleneck

Before buying more speed, know what is actually limiting you. Four things sit between the plan and the experience, and any of them will cap you long before the line does:

  • Wi-Fi. A device on Wi-Fi typically sees a few hundred Mbps at best, and far less at distance or on a congested channel. If your plan is faster than your Wi-Fi, upgrading the plan changes nothing for wireless devices. Test the wireless hop itself in the Wi-Fi guide.
  • The server at the other end. A single download runs at whatever that server will give you. Speed tests use many parallel streams precisely because one stream rarely fills a modern line — which is why a speed test can report 500 Mbps while a real download sits at 30.
  • Your own hardware. An old router, a 100 Mbps port, a marginal cable. Test a wired link end to end in the Ethernet guide.

The honest summary

For most households the plan stopped being the limiting factor several upgrades ago. Wi-Fi, server-side caps and latency now decide how the connection feels — and none of them are fixed by paying for a bigger download number.

STEP 5Test before you buy

If you are considering an upgrade, spend twenty minutes proving the plan is the problem first. The order matters — each step rules out a cheaper explanation than “buy more speed”:

  • Are you getting what you pay for? Test on a wired device, close to the router, with the house quiet. If it is well under the plan, the fault is inside your network or with your provider — and an upgrade may just buy you a bigger number you also do not receive. See how to test properly.
  • Does it stay responsive when busy? Run a bufferbloat test. A poor grade here explains far more everyday frustration than a low speed does.
  • Is it only some devices or rooms? Then it is Wi-Fi or cabling, and the plan is irrelevant.
  • Is the upload the thing running out? Watch the connection during a backup or a long call. If everything degrades together, you have found it — and upload is often the cheaper thing to fix, sometimes by scheduling rather than spending.

STEP 6When upgrading is the right answer

Sometimes it genuinely is. Upgrade when:

  • Your measured concurrent demand approaches your plan — the download meter above lands close to or over what you pay for, on a normal evening rather than a hypothetical one.
  • Your upload is the constraint and cannot be scheduled around. Regular video calls plus cameras plus backups is a real upload load; if it cannot be moved to off-hours, more upstream is the fix. Where a symmetric plan is offered, this is usually the strongest reason to take it.
  • You verified a full-speed wired test and still run out. That is the clean case: the network delivers the plan, and the plan is the ceiling you are hitting.

And when you do upgrade, size it to the upload you need first. The download tier will look after itself — upstream is what most plans are actually short of, and what most households actually run out of.
